Here's the last in my series of the top mistakes I see new slide guitarists making. This one is a biggie, but is often shied away from by even professional slide players.
Neglecting string muting:
I find that not enough attention is paid to string muting with both the right and left hands. This is true of most slide instruction as well! It can be hard to explain, and hard to coordinate, and so gets treated as something of an afterthought.
However, string muting is what takes an average slide player and turns them into a great slide player! It first of all cleans the sound up, and secondly provides the essential punctuation for soulful and funky phrasing.
