If you’re familiar with the work of Ry Cooder, you’ll understand why he’s one of my inspirations when it comes to slide guitar. His musical career has spanned six decades and he truly is one of the greats, so if you aren’t already a fan, check out his music today!
Ry Cooder was born in Los Angeles in 1947 and began playing guitar as a child. He soon began channeling his musical talent into slide guitar, and took a deep dive into the roots of American music while other musicians of his age were focused on rock ’n’ roll.
Cooder worked as a session player with bands such as Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band and Rising Sons, and his slide guitar playing meant he was soon in demand with the biggest names in the business. Bands including The Rolling Stones and The Doors featured his slide guitar on some of their tracks and this established him as a leading light in the world of slide.
As a solo artist, Ry Cooder spent many years reviving old songs and traditions, blending gospel music with blues and R&B to create a rich, soulful sound, full of emotion. Cooder continued to work collaboratively with other musicians across the world, including a trip to Cuba that led to the creation of the Buena Vista Social Club project, and a partnership with Indian musician Vishwa Mohan Bhatt that won a Grammy.
Many film soundtracks have featured the unique slide guitar of Ry Cooder, including Wim Wenders’ Paris, Texas (1984), and his legacy is continued by artists from Eric Clapton to Bonnie Raitt and AJ Ghent.
Ry Cooder continues to perform and record, inspiring new generations to understand the global connections made possible by slide guitar. I feel privileged to follow in his footsteps!
