If you're looking to enhance your playing with a touch of Eastern flair, diving into the Lydian mode can be a rewarding adventure. This mode is one of my favourites. It's not only great-sounding but also closely aligned with the major scale, making it an accessible one to learn for those who have made a start with scales.
Introduction to the Lydian Mode
The beauty of the Lydian mode lies in its simplicity and effectiveness. It's an ideal scale to incorporate with your foundational practice, ear training, and those smooth, slow-motion slides that you may already be working on. Whether you're just starting or revisiting your basic techniques, this mode can infuse a fresh dose of inspiration.
Exploring the Lydian Mode in D
Let’s get into the Lydian mode in the key of D. The Lydian mode is essentially a major scale with just one note changed. You'll make a subtle yet impactful modification by raising the fourth scale degree by one semitone. This means in D Major, your G (the fourth scale degree) will be raised to G#. It’s a small shift, but it completely changes the whole mood and texture of the music.
The Transformative Power of One Note
So you’ll start off playing your major scale as normal. Use your top string, tuned to a D.
D (open string), E (2nd fret), F# (4th fret). But after your first three notes (in D: D, E, F#) the transformation happens.
Rather than hitting G on the 5th fret, stretch further to your 6th fret for G#.
Then, continue with your major scale as normal - A (7th fret), B (9th fret), C# (11th fret), D (12th fret.)
Back down: 12, 11, 9, 7, 6, 4, 2, 0. i.e. D, C#, B, A, G#, F#, E, D.
Notice how changing that one note changes the whole atmosphere and effect of the scale.
With such a simple adjustment, you're adding a new colour to your musical palette—one that gives your playing an Eastern-inspired vibe.
