Sharing Your Music With Others

The idea of performing as a musician can feel intimidating, especially if you are not a confident player yet, but it can bring new elements to your musical journey and help you to feel comfortable with getting to know your instrument.

I have been lucky enough to play on stages large and small, and some of my favourite performances have been small, intimate occasions with the people I love most. Playing a few songs for friends or family at Christmas can be a great opportunity to share your music with others, and give you a chance to build your confidence and nurture your skills as a musician.

Christmas gatherings create the perfect environment for low-pressure performing. The people around you are relaxed and appreciative of live music, and just one song can create memories that stick with people long after the festive season has passed.

Real-world practice can be very helpful as you learn to play. No matter how much you rehearse alone in your room, you can only grow certain skills when you play for others. You'll learn how to keep going if you make a mistake, how to breathe through nervous moments and how to stay focused despite distractions. These are the experiences that make you a musician.

And here’s a secret every performer eventually learns: the more you do it, the easier it gets. Each time you share a song with others, you'll chip away at stage fright and build confidence. Performing stops feeling scary and starts to feel fun!

Whether you're playing Christmas songs in the lounge or performing your favourite slide guitar tracks at a local event, your friends and family will love to share the progress you're making and enjoy your music with you.
