If you're a slide guitarist, you'll know that the unique tone and sound of the slide lends itself to storytelling and emotion in a way that many instruments cannot. This makes it the perfect medium for songwriting, and if you've got an idea inside, slide gives you a wonderful opportunity to express it.
Here are my top songwriting tips:
Start with tuning, not chords
Open tunings aren’t just a technical choice, they’re a mood. Play around with the tuning and find the emotion behind the song before you start writing lyrics.
Give yourself space
Slide pieces are created with beautiful notes and the spaces in between. Think long notes, slow bends and unresolved phrases, which often say more than fast runs can.
Relish the imperfections
String noise, slight pitch drift and uneven vibrato can become character. If it feels human, it probably belongs in the song so don't over-polish.
Use the slide as a voice, not a solo tool
Think of the slide as the singer between the verses, responding, arguing, or comforting the lyrics. Let the voice of the guitar sing.
Experiment with drones
Repeating bass notes or open strings creates a hypnotic foundation that you can build your song around.
Follow the sustain
Pay attention to where notes naturally want to ring out. Those moments often lend themselves to choruses or emotional peaks.
Explore restraint
One well-placed slide line can hit harder than constant movement. Silence is part of the phrasing.
Play with call-and-response
Let a vocal line end unfinished, then let the slide complete the thought, or challenge it if that feels more authentic.
Record yourself from the start
Slide performances are emotional snapshots. Capture them before you overthink or polish the real grit out of your piece.
Most of all, have fun with songwriting - it's a pleasure and an adventure, and sometimes a frustration! But it's all part of the process and making music is a truly special way to spend your spare time.
